Ten days ago, heavy showers in rural Maharashtra led to a large supply of vegetables to Mumbai’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market in last few days, bringing down prices of few vegetables to just Rs 3 to 4 per kg. The supply brought down the prices of vegetables at the APMC market but the prices remained unchanged at the retail markets.

According to APMC traders, around two days agp, the price of cabbage was as low as Rs 30 for 10 kg. However, the price of cabbage remained unchanged at retail markets and was sold at around Rs 24 per kg. Similarly, the cost of tomatoes was fixed between Rs 20 and 24 at the Dadar retail market, in spite of the supply of over 75 trucks of tomatoes at the APMC market having brought it down to Rs 4 to 6 per kg.
Govindrao Bhujbal, a farmer from Junner and an APMC trader, “There is an optimum supply of vegetables in the market since last few days,” said Bhujbal. In Narayangaon, the area known for its bumper harvest of tomatoes, a 25 kg-crate of tomatoes was sold for just Rs 40.
A vegetable vendor at Dadar, on condition of anonymity, claimed they are supposed to compensate for damaged vegetables and transport. “We also have to pay for transportation and labour charges at the APMC market,” he said. Usually, price of vegetables remains high in October and goes down at the end of the month. This year, the price of vegetables has already dropped will be remain stable till the month’s end,” said Avinash Patil, deputy secretary of the APMC market.u00a0
