Nolan Pinto in conversation with Rohit Bal and Wendell Rodricks

We got the opportunity to meet two leading fashion designers who were in town recently and so we decided to ask them the same questions. Their answers spoke volumes of who they actually were...

Nolan Pinto: What do you think should be the in fashion this winter?
Wendell Rodricks: Considering the weather, one needs to resort to a certain amount of layering. Being a young vibrant city, vibrancy should be kept in mind.
Rohit Bal: The weather makes Bangalore beautiful. It's a treat to live here. One can wear practically anything!

NP: Why is fashion so important to you?
WR: It's an extremely basic need for a human being to feel good. Fashion allows them that vanity. The easiest way to buy happiness is through clothes. Wearing the same clothes, I would certainly end up feeling bored. Clothes are like mood enhancers.
RB: Fashion is an attitude. It has got nothing to do with what you wear. It's a lifestyle and also a way to express your inner style.

NP: How would you define your latest collection?
WR:
Well, I have three collections to talk about. At the Calcutta fashion week, the theme was the Earth Goddess. We explored eco friendly clothes by using dyes hand grown by tribal people. We actually got these tribes to stop cutting trees and plant these dyeing plants instead. It was a seven-year project. At the Lakme fashion week, it was Brazilian Bossa nova. It was light, fun, young and was like a carnival sort of collection. At The Wills India fashion week, the clothes were based on cubism. So, we tried to address three different types of people, the eco friendly, the fun loving and the artistic. For the current show, I have based my collection on birds and bird in flight. It's a very fluid and sensual collection.
RB: My present collection is a reflection of the glory of India. It will stir a very strong ethnic Indian feeling, taking us back to the concept of luxury in India. As a nation we are trying to recreate the past. We are loosing an identity that we are trying really hard to get back.
