Cops suspect phishing case; victim was promised delivery of laptop, iPhone within week of payment on Nov 6

On November 3, Desai supposedly ordered a laptop and iPhone for Rs 69,700 a deal offered by an electronic goods company Planet Connexion on online classified website www.ivarta.com.u00a0

Shipping costs extra

An official named who said his name was Williams reportedly emailed Desai to deposit the total amount in an HDFC savings account in the name of Rakesh Singh.

Desai confirmed the payment through an email on November 6.

"I was promised the consignment through courier within a week," said Desai, who was asked to pay up an additional sum of Rs 35,000 as shipping charges, which he deposited in an ICICI bank account in the name of Panigrahi.

Unanswered calls

Desai did not receive the courier within a week and several reminders and messages left for Williams were just not answered.

"The telephone number of Planet Connexion in Kimberley remained out of order. I trusted Williams as ivarta.com is a reliable site and has the best deals for laptops."

In his complaint to the Cubbon Park police, Desai has asked the police to seize the two accounts where he deposited the money.

"It is a common phishing case, but the modus operandi is different. We are investigating the matter," said a police official, who requested anonymity.

The Other Side
A disclaimer on www.ivarta.com warns surfers of the dangers of being cheated in online purchases. The site says the management is not responsible for any kind of cheating.
