Don Bosco were languishing at third place in the standings with 12 points from six games and only a win could have helped them make the playoffs. The game looked like ending in a stalemate, but in stepped substitute Lance Fernandes, who side footed home the winner four minutes before the final whistle much to the delight of their fans, who had turned out in large numbers.

Don Bosco had their chances in the first half and even had a goal ruled out for offside. But thereafter, D’Assisi defended brilliantly and kept Bosco at bay for most of the encounter.

Before the match, St Francis D’Assisi were top of the table with 13 points from six games, while St Stanislaus were second with 13 points from five games.

A loss for Bosco here would have meant an end to their campaign, while a draw would have still kept them in contention. But that would have hinged on St Stanislaus losing their remaining two games. St Francis D’Assisi, on the other hand, needed only a draw to ensure qualification.
