Says Delhi University Students' Union's newly-elected president Ajay Chhikara in a candid interview with MiD DAY

For the second consecutive year, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) made a near sweep in Delhi University Students Union Elections held on Friday, winning three of the four seats. Ajay Chhikara of the Law Centre polled 11,164 votes to defeat his nearest rival Neha Singh of the ABVP by a margin of over 2,300 votes in the contest for the president's post, emerging as the lone victorious NSUI candidate.

What is your agenda for the coming year as president of DUSU?
I would like to keep it simple. This means my focus will be on implementing the manifesto we have released. It includes making the university better in terms of infrastructure and facilities, equivalent to foreign universities. I want to make the campuses as well as far-flung colleges secure for women. Also, make the place friendly and safe for women students of the northeast.

Who is your political idol?
Rahul Gandhi is my idol. He should definitely become the prime minister in the long run.

What is your stance on Anna Hazare?
He is a senior person; I respect him and the cause he fought for. Yet I believe the means of agitation must be democratic.

How will you coordinate with a union in which three other posts are held by the opposition party?
We will be office bearers now and conduct our duties in that manner. I won't be a dictator and will coordinate with them at every level.

What is your view on women?
I think women deserve the highest reverence as is given in the Indian scriptures as well. I have two sisters and I am sensitive to their concerns.

What do you think of Public Display of Affection (PDA) on campus?
I feel it's a very personal matter. A girl and a guy can be great friends. They are free to have their own time within the societal limits, yet without being vulgar. I will look after the security of young students, if they are harassed by anyone.

Will you stand up by the rights and cause of the LGBT community as well?
I do not support their cause. I have never attended any of the queer parades in the campus. But, if anyone comes to me with a problem, I will surely protect them.

Are you a book-lover?
No, I only read newspapers.

What are your hobbies?
I love driving, making friends, bullying them and good food. I lead a very simple life.

Who is your favourite female actor?
I just love Katrina Kaif!

Poll vault
The posts of vice-president, secretary and joint secretary were all won by the ABVP, whose campaign was centred on alleged corruption in the Congress-led UPA government. Vikas Choudhary polled 11,855 votes, while NSU'Is Bhupinder Choudhary got 8,075 votes in the elections to the vice-president's post. In the contest for the Secretary's post, ABVP's Vikas Yadav won by a margin of 2,351 votes defeating his nearest rival of NSUI's Parag Sharma. ABVP's Deepak Bansal will be the new Joint Secretary of the DUSU as he trounced his NSUI rival Asish Choudhary by
2,105 votes.
