Shiv Sena chief goes on a city-wide tour to check ongoing repair work before the rains arrive, after reports that work on nearly half the 967 roads will not be completed in time

Sena chief Udhhav Thackeray has not taken too kindly to reports that nearly half of the 967 city roads that are undergoing repairs are far from being completed and have missed the May 31 deadline for completion.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities have claimed the municipal body is not solely responsible for the delay, as it had to follow certain protocol and could proceed without approvals from various agencies such as the traffic department and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The construction of all the roads was to be completed before the arrival of the rains, but by the looks of it, the BMC has failed miserably. It was not surprising therefore to see Thackeray along with city Mayor Sunil Prabhu, Leader of the House Trushna Vishwasrao and Chairman of the Standing Committee Yahsodhar Phanse, drive around town yesterday to check the progress of work on major roads.

Thackarey told the workers to maintain a standard footpath height all over the city as he observed a major difference in the footpath’s height and the road being constructed here.

BMC Chief Engineer, Laxma Vatkar said, “We have completed about 30 per cent of the construction and repair work. The pace of work slowed down due to the simultaneous work on the storm water pipelines and the concretisation process but now the work is on in full swing.” After visiting all the locations, Thackeray said, “The BMC is taking efforts to complete the construction of all roads and clean the drains, but the BMC alone is not to be blamed for the delay.”
