Double the fitness and the fun

Gone are the days when fitness regimes meant a lap in the pool or a session of aerobics at the gym. Innovations and an increasing interest in experimenting with diverse fitness techniques have led to a parallel industry that combines different routines to make for an interesting session that is fun, engaging, and healthy too

Double the fitness and the fun

In a day and age when people are pressed for time, and patience levels are on an all-time low, it’s important to have an interesting tone to everything that one does. The same goes for workouts. Taking a cue from this, several fitness trainers and health experts are dabbling with fitness routines that are a mix of two individual workout disciplines.

Aqua Aerobics is a fun-filled session of conducting aerobics in water

Fitness programmes such as Yogalates (Yoga + Pilates), Aqua Zumba, Aqua Aerobics, Martial arts + weight training, Bollybics (Bollywood dance routines + Aerobics) and many more have had people hooked on to it. It has become a rage not just among fitness freaks but also others, who would otherwise struggle to follow fitness routines.

Shake that body
“The fitness industry has grown globally by leaps and bounds. Today, everyone is health conscious and is looking for new and different ways to get fit. People don’t want to have the same workout routine for a long time because it becomes boring and mechanical, almost monotonous,” says Simi Melwani, who trains people in Yogalates. She believes that the body reaches a plateau after doing the same regime over and over again. For better results and to enhance one’s fitness levels, Simi feels that it’s important to shake one’s body out of a routine. “Fitness instructors all over the world are trying to come up with innovative and effective routines that create impact and give best results,” she adds.

According to fitness trainers, mixing two routines is not just appealing, but is slightly more beneficial too in terms of weight loss and body toning. Trainer Puja Desai explains that if you get the benefits of two workouts in a single session, then it is certainly better for the body.

“These routines help one to achieve a lot more in a single mixed session than in individual sessions. But, since every individual has different fitness needs and different level of fitness, the trainer must design a customised routine for each client. If it is a group class then there should be progressions for each exercise to cater to everyone’s needs,” says Desai.

Weight and diet matters
Celebrity fitness expert Satyajit Chaurasiya, who trains the likes of Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, has a slightly different take. “If a client’s aim is to only lose weight, then these double workout regimes are very helpful. But if your aim is to gain muscle as well, then two-three days in the gym is essential along with these routines. Only following these routines diligently will not help you build muscles,” he informs.

Celebrity trainer Satyajit Chaurasiya says that in India not many celebrities go for the dual routines that are popular nowadays. According to him, most celebrities stick to either gymming or yoga

Diet plays an important role as well, as only workout will not yield the desired results. “There is no shortcut to losing weight; losing weight and getting fit have a lot to do with diet as well as exercise. Around 70% of the routine would be dedicated to one’s diet and 30% would be related to the workout one follows. One needs to practice a balanced diet and work out three-four times a week. It’s crucial to set goals and be disciplined. If you follow all of the above then workouts will make you lose weight and get fitter, toned and flexible bodies,” reveals Melwani.

Age on bar
Although people from all walks of life have shown interest in these double workouts, the predominance of women cannot be ignored. “People in the age group of 21 to 45 attend these classes. There are younger people in group classes and most of them are females from different professions. There are scuba diving instructors, PR executives, corporates as well as housewives. Older enthusiasts prefer to approach me for personal sessions as they have health issues, which cannot be addressed within a group class,” shares Melwani.

Case Study

I’ve been a fitness freak for 20 years, and I like to try out new things. I have done Pilates before for a year, and I have practiced yoga too many times but I reached a level where I needed a challenge. So, when I heard about Yogalates, I felt that this would be different and interesting. I love yoga as well as Pilates but I find each of them relatively boring on their own. But this is enjoyable because it offers the best of both. Yoga focuses on one’s spirituality while Pilates works on your core. Hence, yogalates not only helps one spiritually but also, physically. It’s a beautiful combination. I’ve been following this for three months now, three times a week for an hour each and I have seen a marked difference in myself.
