Manchar and Warje cops arrest 8 people from 2 families

A woman was killed while another was set on fire and had to be admitted in hospital for treatment in two cases of dowry harassment in the district. In Manchar, a woman was beaten to death and her body thrown in a well.

The police arrested four people, including the victim's husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law, for the violence that led to her death.

Body dumped in well
The body was found in a well two kilometres from the family's home in Pimpal Khadaki, Ambegaon taluka. The police said by dumping the body in the well, the accused had tried to destroy evidence and mislead the police into thinking the woman had committed suicide.

The body was fished out a day after the woman was reported missing. The dead woman was identified as Kalpana Pokharkar (21). Her husband Nitin, in-laws Suryakant and Ratanbai and her mother-in-law's brother Jaisingh Hanumant Yayal were arrested after her father Bhagwan Rode filed a police complaint.

Sub Inspector S R Kale said Pokharkar was being harassed to make her bring money from her parents' home for the purpose of purchasing a flat.u00a0 In another case that was reported at the Warje police station, four people from a woman's family, including her husband and in-laws, were arrested for an attempt to murder her and dowry harassment.

Set ablaze
The police case was registered after the woman's husband allegedly set her on fire when she turned down demands for her to bring money from her parents to purchase a motorcycle. The incident took place on Saturday morning. The victim was identified as Manisha Salunkhe (25), who lives behind Sai Baba temple in Wadarwasti.

The police said Salunkhe and her husband Sunil gotu00a0married some four years ago and the couple had a two-year-old son. According to the victim, her husband, his mother Malan and her brothers-in-law Nitin (23) and Sachin (21) harassed her in order to make her get money from her parents' home.

The police arrested the people Salunkhe named. Salunkhe is admitted to Sassoon General Hospital and is undergoing treatment for burn injuries.
