Students from top Indian design schools get ready to create the car of the future; first round of contest ends in Delhi

What will the car of 2016 look like? Will it fly, swim or still move on wheels? That's what students from 100 institutes across the country are pondering as they prepare for the Automotive Design Challenge (ADC), the ultimate in designing dream wheels.

The winner of the first edition, IIT-Delhi, got a chance to work with Tata Motors. And SIAM promises this year's prize will be even bigger.

Last edition's winner Neha Chandra and Ajay, from IIT, Delhi, had designed the concept car Shipra. The car's interior resembled the face of Lord Ganesha. "Inspired by the Indian woman's body, the rear of the car was heavier than its front. The toughest part was to figure which feature defines an Indian car, as that was the theme of the contest. The competition boosts a student's confidence and the exposure it gave us was phenomenal," said Chandra.u00a0 The theme this year is Mobility for Indian Youth - 2016. It is based on the challenges that commuters will face in 2016 related to environment, fuel, road speed and style statement of the vehicle.

The result of the contest will be announced on January 7, during the SIAM Styling & Design Conclave 2010. The winning designs will be showcased at Auto Expo 2010.

After the first round, which concluded in Delhi on Thursday, 10 best designs from 100 prestigious institutes like IIT-Delhi, IIT-Guwahati, MIT-Pune, NID-Ahmedabad and MS Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies were selected. The second round of evaluation will take place in January next year.

"In present generation cars, apart from engine power and performance, looks and design play an important role. The Automotive Design Challenge lets students be as creative as they can. It offers a platform to those who aspire to make it big in the field of automotive designing. This exposure will benefit the Indian automobile industry in the long run," said CV Raman, chairman, SIAM Styling & Design Group.

During the last edition, SIAM received 60 entries from over 20 institutes, out of which nine final teams were selected. Each team was given three months to construct the dream car.
