The Vakola police have arrested a former vice-president of an engineering company in an attempt to murder case following a tiff over a minor road accident that escalated into a full-blown brawl. One victim is battling for his life after being struck on the head by the accused in the incident that occurred in Kalina at 7 pm yesterday.
According to cops, the accused Indrajeet Sawant (35), a resident of Kalina, was drunk when he rammed his vehicle into Rishi Gandhi’s parked car at CST Road. After Gandhi reprimanded Sawant for his rash driving, a drunken Sawant took out a baseball bat from his car and attacked Gandhi, bruising him badly. He then vented his anger on Gandhi’s car by smashing it with the bat.

Seeing the fracas, a large crowd gathered and a local resident Sanjay Jaiswal intervened, pleading with Sawant to stop assaulting Gandhi. In a fit of rage, Sawant swung his bat towards the mediator and smashed his head. Jaiswal fell to the ground and within minutes blood started oozing from his head, ears and nose. Seeing the ferocious assault, the gathered crowd thrashed Sawant and started pelting his car with stones, damaging it in the process.
Battered
Cops arrived at the scene and rushed Gandhi to the hospital. He had sustained bruises and was discharged within a few hours. However, Jaiswal suffered a fracture to his skull and his face is battered. He is being treated in the ICU of Nanavati Hospital, as he is in a critical condition.
“Sawant was completely drunk when we arrested him. We have booked him under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and several other sections. He was produced at the Bandra court and has been remanded to police custody till June 12. We are yet to record Jaiswal’s statement,” said Santosh Rassum, sub- inspector at Vakola police station. u00a0
