A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook northern Japan on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 9:35 am (0605 IST), was 80 kilometres southeast of the city of Sapporo on the northern island of Hokkaido, the USGS reported.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of only five kilometres. Around 20 per cent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
