Thane: Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Eknath Shinde has asked the government to immediately sanction Rs 10,000 per acre as interim relief to farmers affected by drought in the state.

The government should not do mere paper work but provide immediate relief to farmers who are affected in drought-prone regions of Marathwada and Vidarbha, Shinde said in a statement here yesterday.

The state government should sanction an interim relief of Rs 10,000 per acre to farmers hit by drought in the affected regions, he said. Though the state government provides an aid of Rs 1 lakh to the family of farmers who commit suicide but instead they should give interim relief to curb incidence of farmer suicides, the MLA from Thane said.

Referring to a statement of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that 'panchnama' would be conducted on crop loss and a report on the same would be sent to the Centre following which assistance and relief would be rendered, Shinde said it is long process which may result in delay in providing relief.

He also demanded that the government can relax the process of recovery of loans and pay crop insurance amount to farmers at the earliest.
