Burdwan: A herd of wild elephants raided Pursha village under Galsi police station in Burdwan district killing a man and injuring his wife besides damaging several houses, DFO Ajay Das said on Friday.

Nanulal Soren (64) and his wife Phulmani were sleeping on the verandah last night when an elephant trampled them. While Nanulal died, Phulmani was under treatment in hospital, Das said.

The herd of eight pachyderms from Damla range reached the village at night crossing the Damodar river via Bankura district in search of food, he said. It is yet to be ascertained how many houses have been damaged in the elephant attack.

A team has been sent to Pursha to drive the herd away, the DFO said.
