Hardware businessman Mohammed Ali Zakaria, who quietly fled from hospital after crashing his Yamaha FZ into a stationary Tata Indica on Tuesday, has finally been arrested. 22-year-old Zakaria, who runs his business from Pydhonie, lives with his family at Kalyan.
On Tuesday, while racing some friends on Western Express Highway, he rammed his bike into a car parked on the side of the road at Vakola Bridge. The Tata Indica that was damaged in the accident was being used by complainant Bharat Jadhav — a resident of Malad (East) — to ferry daughter-in-law Lavanya to Sewri TB hospital as she was in critical condition.

The patient was lying in the backseat at the time, while her husband Laxman was standing behind the car –, which had overheated – signalling other vehicles to pass by. The impact was so powerful that even though the car’s handbrake was on, it moved forward about 10 feet before coming to a halt. None of the occupants of the car were hurt, but Zakaria was badly injured and was taken to a private hospital by friends.
When MiD DAY reached the hospital in the evening, Zakaria had already left without notifying the police. When MiD DAY asked him about Zakaria, Shaukat Inamdar, duty officer at Vakola police station, expressed his ignorance. In fact, the sub-inspector did not even know the biker’s name.
On being contacted yesterday, Inamdar said, “On Wednesday, based on the description provided by the complainant we came to know that Zakaria may be at Saboo Siddique hospital in Byculla. But he wasn’t present there. We then went to Saboo Siddique hospital at Dongri, where we found the accused.”
Police have recorded Zakaria’s statement and say he will have to undergo surgery because of the serious nature of his injuries.
After receiving treatment Zakaria will be arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving and cops will investigate the reason behind his escape.u00a0
