England skipper Charlotte Edwards' unbeaten 121-ball 106 ensured a third-place finish for the defending champions in the ICC Women's World Cup as they handed a four-wicket defeat to New Zealand in the play-off match at Brabourne Stadium yesterday.
Edwards became the first women’s cricketer to score 5,075 runs in ODIs. This is Edwards’ second century of this edition of the World Cup and she joins Australia’s Karen Rolton and New Zealand’s Debbie Hockley as the only three women to have scored two centuries in a single World Cup. She also equalled Debbie Hockley’s record of four centuries in Women’s World Cups.

“I came into this tournament after having worked incredibly hard over the winter not just on my skills, but also on my fitness. It’s really nice to reap rewards for that. Two centuries in this tournament... I am really proud of that. But for me it’s been about contributing to the team and today was about getting to third-place and ending the tournament on a high. I am proud of England,” said Edwards.
Chasing a moderate total of 221, Edwards played a captain’s knock and hit 15 boundaries to take England to 222 in 47 overs. Lydia Greensway (31), wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor (28) and Arran Brindle (27) too contributed with the bat in England’s victory.
Lucy Doolan (3-50) was the pick of the New Zealand bowling attack. u00a0After being put into bat, the Kiwis scored 220-8 in the stipulated 50 overs with Amy Satterthwaite (85) being the highest scorer for her side.u00a0
