Apart from hosting exhibitions and showcasing artworks by various artists, Sakshi Gallery is also doubling up as a venue to screen films. They have collaborated with Alliance Francaise, Mumbai, to screen films at their gallery once every month and for over the last six months, the gallery has been screening films on their Art Thursdays. Today, they will be screening seven films that have won awards at The Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

The gallery will also be inaugurating a new art show by Chennai-based artist Nandini Valli Muthiah on Lord Krishna. “We are one of the very few galleries that are also screening films. We started this initiative a while ago and we are happy with the response,” says Sanyogita Deo, Assistant Curator at Sakshi Gallery, adding that the films are curated by Alliance Francaise.

The line-up of films includes The Lion and the Song, a film by Bretislav Pojar. It won the Grand Prize award at the first Annecy International Animated Film Festival that was held in 1960. The film is a poetic drama, which uses the help of expressive puppets to tell the story of a harlequin (clown) who is survived by his art. The Lady and the Cellist by Jean-François Laguionie is a story about a cellist who raises a storm in the sea by playing his instrument.

The Annecy International Film Festival is considered to be one of the most famous animation film festivals of the world. All the seven films that will be screened have received awards in this festival between 1960 and 1970.

“We wanted to bring these films to the Indian audience. We take up things that sound original and that will interest the audience here,” says Sheryn Mulla, Executive and Cultural Assistant, Alliance Française de Bombay.
