External elevator, to be installed in 25 buildings, can evacuate 150 people at a time, in just eight minutes in a 26/11-like situation

In a bid to boost rescue operations in case of a repeat of a 26/11, an Israel-based security agency, has collaborated with BCL Secure Premises, an Indian security company.

The Israeli firm will install the Escape Route System, an external elevator, on top of about 25 buildings in Mumbai within a year.

The system can rescue 150 people from a height of 300 metres (approximately 80 floors) in only eight minutes.

Target

It will not only help rescue hostages during a terror attack but also move them to safe areas in the building during an emergency.

Commander Sunil Chauhan from the aIndian Navy said, "In a city like Mumbai, such a system is required, as tall buildings are always the prime target of terrorists."

In a country like India, such a system will boost the morale of the security personnel and lower the risk factor. We will also provide training to the security personnel."

Save time

S K Gupta, former assistant director, Special Protection Group (SPG), said, "Israel is the best when it comes to managing security in the world. Systems like the Escape Rescue System will strengthen security in the city."

He added, "It took hours for the NSG to enter Hotel Trident and Taj during the 26/11 terror attacks, but a system like this could have enabled them to enter in no time."

Elaborating on the need for such a system, Gupta said, "Terrorists use sophisticated techniques which cannot be tackled without a modern system."

The System

the Escape Route System is an external elevator installed on the rooftop of a building and can rescue 150 people from the height of 300 metres (approximately 80 floors) in 8 minutes.

When not in use, the system is folded and essentially 'invisible' and unobtrusive. It was initiated in 2003 to meet the urgent need for safe evacuation methods for high-rise buildings.
