200 BEST buses have wound up back at depots for repairs owing to the abysmal state of the city’s roads

It’s not just citizens who have to bear with back-breaking commutes on the city’s roads, but also BEST Undertaking. Nearly 200 of its buses have been sent to depots for repairs owing to potholes during the monsoon, alleged BEST committee member and advocate Sandesh Kondwilkar.

Sources claimed 15 of these are double-decker buses. BEST runs 125 such buses.

The sources said BEST staff had to put in extra hours at work to get all the buses back in shape.

“Look at the streets. They are riddled with potholes. Take a walk near the BEST depots. You’ll find that the approach roads near the depots are filled with potholes,” alleged Kondwilkar.

The Congress is now demanding that the BMC, responsible for the maintenance of roads, should bear the expenses of the buses’ repairs.

“We pay road and other taxes, but roads are in such poor condition. Why shouldn’t the BMC pay for buses’ repairs? We have had to run buses even on waterlogged streets,” said the BEST member.

Mumbai’s notorious potholes have claimed many lives and have often brought large parts of the city to a standstill.
