Former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad lambasted the Indian team for its poor fielding and termed it 'atrocious'. India lost its ICC World T20 match against West Indies by 14 runs yesterday and now stand on the brink of elimination from the tournament.

"My boys in Ahmedabad field better," said Gaekwad, who is part of the Gujarat Ranji Trophy set-up.

"Fielding has been a big problem for a long time now. These guys are fielding atrociously. They are dropping simple catches and even the basic pick-up and throws are not proper. It is very frustrating to look at guys playing for India and not knowing the basics," he said.

Gaekwad singled out fielding to be the single largest factor behind India's lacklustre performance. He said that it was affecting the bowlers' performances as well.

"It's the fielders who make the bowlers look good. Yesterday, we saw the expressions on the bowlers' faces. Some of them looked absolutely frustrated with the fielders," he said.

The former India player also stressed the importance of fielding in limited overs cricket. "Fielding is very important. Like somebody is batting well and suddenly a wicket falls or there is a mix-up with the other batsman it can upset the rhythm, bring in pressure and eventually change the flow of the match," he explained.
