Sharad Jayram Mhatre, resident of Manjarile in Badlapur and former BJP corporator, was travelling from Ulhasnagar to Badlapur and had reached Veer Rubbers in Ambernath, Kalyan around 11 pm, when two people in a car coming from the opposite direction opened fire at him.

Mhatre, who is also president of the Aagri Yuvak Sangathana, managed to dodge one bullet but the other caught him in his right leg.

“Mhatre managed to miss one bullet but the other brushed his right thigh and he was immediately rushed to Dhanwantri Hospital in Badlapur where doctors removed the bullet. He is presently out of danger,” said Mandar Purkar, a close friend of Mhatre’s who accompanied him to the hospital.

“We suspect the motive behind the firing to either be a land dealing gone wrong or his opposition to shifting of some slums in Ambernath,” said Purkar.

The police said they have registered a case against unknown person(s) under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Arms Act.

The cops have started a hunt for the accused. “The Thane crime branch as well as our Ambernath police have got into action and we are trying to trace the accused,” said a police officer from Ambernath police station.

All persons dealing with Mhatre have been summoned to the police station for questioning to get leads in the case.u00a0
