Flying squad has been formed to crackdown on offenders at parties
All those planning to welcome the New Year by raising a toast beyond the party deadline, or trying to pass off spurious liquor in the middle of the night, beware!
With celebrations just a month away, the State Excise Department has gone into overdrive mode to make sure that revellers adhere by the drinking norms.
Party poopers: Excise officials will carry out surprise raids on banquet
halls that tend to allow parties that go beyond the 1.30 am deadline.
Moreover, to curb the sale of illicit/spurious liquor in the city, the department is conducting surprise checks to scrutinise the quality of liquor served at party halls and bars in the city. The department would also be establishing new check posts to monitor the inflow of alcohol in the state.
A senior excise official, requesting anonymity, said, "We have received orders from our superiors asking us to keep an eye on party and banquets halls, where parties tend to go beyond the prescribed time limit. There are chances that illegal liquor could well be used to fuel such parties. Hence, we're conducting surprise raids to nab the culprits. Besides, we will be concentrating on various exit and entry points to the city. All the check nakas are on our radar and a strict vigil is being kept on liquor movement in the state."
Confirming that a massive quantity of spurious scotch is doing rounds in the market, Narsingh N Mudiraj, superintendent (suburban), Excise Department, said, "In the wake of the forthcoming New Year celebrations, our flying squad has already been pressed into action to curb the sale of spurious liquor that is being imported from the neighbouring states."
Earlier this month, to keep a tab on the quality of liquor served to the customers, the department started collecting samples from bars across the island city. The initiative was taken after the sale of spurious liquor went up in the state.
