Shishir Hattangadi, the former Mumbai Ranji Trophy captain and selector, has applied for the post of a junior selector to the Indian cricket board.

"I am a cricket lover. I wish to contribute in any possible way. Moreover, junior cricket is like raw material where a lot of work is to be done, especially the ironing part.

"Having represented Mumbai for over a decade, I have figured out my own faults and learnt from it. My strength is not what I have achieved in my career but where I have failed," the fifty five-year-old told mid-day yesterday.

Hattangadi once opened the Mumbai batting with legend Sunil Gavaskar. He later played in the same Mumbai team with cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. From 1981 to 1992, Hattangadi featured in 60 first-class matches scoring 3722 runs.

Hattangadi observed that many cricketers did well at the junior level, but faded away due to indifferent form or lack of opportunity.

"My primary focus will be rehabilitating those junior players and help them in extending their career. In the process I will be able to contribute towards the building of a talent pool for the national team," he said while offering his services to Indian cricket.

According to BCCI's pre-condition, a candidate should have played more than 50 first-class matches in India to be considered for a position in the junior National selection committee.

"I am not associated with any state cricket association. I was born in Kolkata, played my cricket for Mumbai and now serving outside Mumbai," said the Ahmedabad-based Hattangadi.
