Beijing: Misty weather in Shanghai forced the opening day of Formula One practice for the Chinese GP to be called off after only a short amount of running, with the medical helicopter unable to fly due to poor visibility.

Drivers got a total of only 21 minutes of track time, all of it during yesterday morning's opening 90-minute session. That session was itself suspended twice while the afternoon's running of practice was called off altogether.

Conditions at the track were damp and drizzly with low cloud and mist were still good enough to for the helicopter to fly, with television choppers circulating above the track throughout.

Drivers will now have only one hour of practice today ahead of qualifying to prepare for Sunday's race, which is predicted to be wet.

“It's not good for the fans watching on TV and even worse for all those people in the stands, who have paid money to come out here from the city or even from other countries,” said Hamilton. “We need to work together with the FIA and (commercial rights holder) FOM to find a solution of some kind when we have circumstances like this in the future,” the Brit fumed.
