Fake certificate racket busted in Pune

Certificates bear names of Arab students who have never enrolled for BBA programme

MiD DAY unearthed two fake Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) passing certificates of Shivaji Kolhapur University (SKU), which university authorities have confirmed as fakes. The matter was also brought to the police's notice.

Said Swati Kharade, the SKU's director of IT, "The two Arab students whose names the certificates bear Talal Naif A and Abdullah Ajemi A were never students of SKU. In fact, no foreign student has enrolled for the programme so far."

The fake certificates carry April 5 and April 7, 2007, as the dates of issue. "Our convocations are held in December and all our certificates issued that year bear the date of December 8, 2007.

Further, the certificates bear the seat number 692, which was allotted to BBA first year student Sachin Patil and 681, which has been allotted to yet another student of the same batch, Vaibhav Patil," Kharade added.

Last week, Yamin Zomo (30), a Cameroon national, was deported by the special branch of Pune police for overstaying and selling false admission certificates to people of various nationalities since 2005.

Zomo had been selling these fakes in at least four African countries, including Burundi," said Bhanupratap Barge, inspector, Special Branch.

It is not clear if the recovered certificates were forged by Zomo or by another gang of foreign students in Pune.
