The girl was depressed due to the family's poor financial condition and immolated herself; on seeing his burnt daughter fighting for her life in a hospital, the father threw himself in front of a train and ended his life
A shocking turn of events was seen at Khar, when a father and daughter killed themselves on the same day. Tragedy struck the Purabia family, who stay at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) colony behind Khar police station.
Purshottam Purabia (52) was a sweeper with the BMC, and lived with his wife and three children at the BMC quarters. His daughter, Roshni (19), had been depressed about the family’s poor financial condition and had complained about the same to her father. But, nothing much could be done about it.
Yesterday, when her father left for work and her siblings and mother were out of the house, the teenager poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire. When family members returned, they found the burnt girl in her room and immediately rushed her to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra. Purshottam was also informed about the mishap.
When he arrived at the hospital, he saw his daughter. Doctors also told him that chances of her survival were slim. In her statement to the hospital, Roshni said that she held no one responsible for the incident, and that she wanted to end her life, as she was fed up of it.
Watching his daughter scream in pain, Purshottam couldn’t absorb the shock of the tragic turn of events and left the hospital. He, later, went to the railway tracks at Khar and committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a Borivli fast local train. The railway police registered the offence and traced his family members with the help of his belongings. Some time later, doctors declared Roshni dead as well.
