Julie Singh is visually impaired. But even then it would not be easy for her father today to look her in the eye. The 10-year-old girl was abandoned by her dad Munna Singh in Sadik Nagar area of south Delhi on June 27. As per reports, Munna had brought the girl to the Capital from Noida sector 84, promising to get her admitted in a residential school for the blind. When the school refused to grant her admission due to insufficient documents, he deserted her.

Munna made Julie sit near a cobbler on the footpath and just left. Seeing the minor girl waiting for so long, a local woman talked to her and found that she had been abandoned. The woman took the girl to Janta Adarsh Andh Vidyalaya in Defence Colony and made a PCR call. Defence Colony police went to the hostel and took the minor's statement.

Left in the lurch
"At around 3 pm the father brought her along and made her sit near a cobbler. After giving her a bottle of drinking water and a packet of biscuit, he left. The girl was waiting there till 5 pm until a local woman found out that she had nowhere to go, and brought her to the hostel," said a caretaker of the school's hostel.

The staff of Janta Adarsh Andh Vidyalaya confirmed that the girl's father had brought her for admission. "When he had come to us, he did not have any requisite documents. So we asked him to get them. A few hours later, we came to know about the incident. She has been brought to the hostel. She can stay here and learn," said the warden of the hostel.

Disconnect
The warden said a similar incident of abandoning a girl had happened fourteen years ago.
Police produced the girl before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) where the magistrate asked the cops to trace her father. However, Julie pleaded with the police not to trace her father. A police official said they can only trace her father but cannot book him in any criminal case.u00a0u00a0

Tale of woes
Julie told MiD DAY that she is a resident of Bihar. Her mother, Anumati died few years after her birth. She has three sisters and her younger brother died a few years ago. She said she became blind when she was around two years old. Soon after that her father left her at her aunt Krishna's place. Krishna would allegedly beat her up over trivial issues.

"I hate my father and don't want to go back. My aunt had complained to my father several times. He told me that he will solve all my problems. I came to know about his intentions only when he fled abandoning me on the roadside," she said.
