Federer braced for 'tough' semis challenge against No 1 Djokovic

Federer braced for 'tough' challenge against Djokovic

Roger Federer admits he will have to be at his best today if he is to see off Novak Djokovic and move one step closer to a record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title.

Federer beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a mouthwatering semi-final with Djokovic, who cruised past Germany’s Florian Mayer in straight sets on Court One.

Federer, seeded third, had fallen at the quarter-final stage in the previous two years and was therefore glad to have made the last four last night.

Despite being arguably the greatest player of all time, 30-year-old Federer knows it is no longer his divine right to waltz into the final at SW19 and he admits he will have to do some serious homework if he is to topple the World No 1. “I had better prepare well, because it’s going to be a tough match,” Federer said.

“Obviously it’s a big deal now. There’s no denying it. It feels great being back in the semis. I haven’t done it for a while, it’s a place where I’ve been so many times before.

Usually once I get to the semis, I’m playing some of my best tennis usually for the last couple rounds.

“But obviously I’m aware that Novak is the defending champion and the World No 1, so that’s not going to make it easy to come through.

“That’s the focus now, instead of taking it two steps at a time where I know I’m holding the trophy.

“I know it’s possible. I know I’m playing really well but I am aware things are going to get complicated.
