Sulafest goes bigger this year, with seven acts slated to perform over two days. We spoke to a few first-timers to find out what you'll be grooving to amidst the vineyards
"I'm actually going to be on the same flight as Sahej," Raghav, aka Raghav 'Diggy' Dang, one of the three members of Reggae Rajahs(see picture), India's first reggae outfit, tells us over the phone. Diggy and his compatriots Mohammed 'MoCity' Abood and Zorawar 'Mr Herbalist' Shukla will be performing along with Sahej Bakshi, the man behind electronica outfit Dualist Enquiry, for the first time at Sulafest.
What can you look forward to? "I'll be playing an all-original electronic set, as well as some remixes of songs by other artistes like Coldplay. But I don't like to plan my sets too much," Bakshi says. That means you might go from swinging to a mellow track that's "conducive to drinking wine" to some "upbeat" tracks, as he puts it. "When making music, I'm not thinking about the genre. All the genres I've heard will influence me -- from techno to house and folk rock." Bakshi is known to not subscribe strictly to genres.
Raghav (he prefers to go by his first name), meanwhile, is kicked about being the only reggae outfit in a space that will see mainly techno and electronic music. "That's not new for us. At Sunburn, for two years in a row, we've been the only non-electronic outfit. India in general is dominated by rock and electronic music, so that's been the case in almost every situation we've played in," he admits.
What you can expect is "different styles of reggae, dance as well as relaxed. We also have a dancehall artiste on tour with us from Russia, so you can expect a lot of drum and base, dancehall, as well as regular roots music," he explains, adding that the performance at the festival goes in conjunction with the celebration of the band's three-year anniversary. "So it's really special. Plus, we've toured with Sahej and I know his music, and I've heard good things about Papon. Overall, it's going to be a big deal."
The fifth edition of Sulafest 2012 takes place at the Sule Vineyards in Nashik on February 4 and 5 from 12.30 pm to 10 pm. For tickets, log on to www.bookmyshow.com
