Feel the electricity!

The once-popular and longstanding Mumbai Times Café has now made way for a new resto-lounge/ nightclub. It aims to shock you, at least with its name, Shockk. Located in the lane off Bandra’s buzzing Linking Road, home to several popular restaurants and clubs, the property is a massive 14,000 sq feet space divided into two sections — the eatery and the nightclub.

The low-seating couches surrounded a largish bar in the centre. Once seated, we checked the makeshift menu, which our attendants informed was temporary, as they plan to expand it soon. We kicked off proceedings with The Idol Chocotini (Rs 320) and a rather funny sounding Jack ur Melon (Rs 363) as our spirit picks. For starters, we opted for Baked Spinach Sheet (Rs 320) and Poached Prawns in Marie Rose sauce (Rs 330).

The Idol Chocotini was a wine and vodka concoction with chocolate sauce mixed in, it tasted right but could do with lesser coconut milk on top. As for the funny-named cocktail, it promised Jack Daniels, muddled with watermelon and passion syrup. It made for a refreshing and tasty drink.

The spinach sheets stuffed with delicious corn and cheese filling, with a tasty salsa sauce add tang while the poached prawn starter, served with simple ketchup and mayo combination were toppers; the pineapple added the right dash of sweetness for the later dish. For our mains, from the vegetarian section, we ordered a Cheese and Herb Gnocchi (Rs 390), and Overnight Marinated Chicken served with Onion and Herb Cake (Rs 410) to satiate our non-vegetarian cravings. The lemon butter sauce complimented the super-soft gnocchi. Doing justice to its name, the chicken was marinated overnight, and like the vegetarian main, it was subtly herbed and the chicken was minced to perfection.

The tandoor was up and running by then, so we opted for the Mutton Seekh Kebab (Rs 350), which was well marinated; the tandoor spicing was perfect. Our only grouse — we noticed mosquitoes flitting on our table — a huge bummer. Also, the building does not have parking so we had to scout to find space elsewhere. We were excited to hear that Shockk plans to introduce live acts in their nightclub section (it was salsa night when we visited). We hope that with a few tweaks, Shockk doesn’t go short-fused like many others on Bandra’s night out map.
