A constable, who shot himself in his car on Tuesday night, succumbed to his bullet wounds at 5 am on Wednesday. Constable Sanket Sunil Sawant had shot himself in the chest twice near the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli.
According to the police, Sawant, who worked as a wireless operator for an IPS officer, committed suicide over the constant arguments his mother and wife had at home. Sawant’s mother works as a cop and is affiliated to the Protection Branch and his wife works as a nurse in a hospital.
“Sawant was a very nice guy. He was outright about his opinions but he never discussed his family life with anyone,” said his batchmate, adding that he worked as an operator and since joining the force in 2003 was transferred once to Kurla, where he served for six months.
A family friend said, “Sawant reported home at 10 pm on Tuesday after which he asked his mother to keep his omelette ready for him, as he was going out for a round in his car. But he didn’t return home.”
Initially, the injured cop was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital where his statement was taken by the cops in which he said that he was committing suicide over a family dispute and not because of any pressure from his superiors. He was then shifted to Sion Hospital, where he breathed his last.
“We have filed an Accidental Death report and not registered a FIR against any person, as the person who used the weapon has not survived,” said an officer from Vikhroli police station.
