The wait is finally over for Suneeta Nighoot’s family and 37 other families awaiting claims due from the insurance company appointed by the University of Pune (UoP).

The insurance firm finally settled the various claims of the 38 students’, and some have been pending for around a year. On Wednesday, a modest function was organised at Ahmadnagar’s New Arts, Commerce and Science College where the Rs 1 lakh claim cheque was handed over to Suneeta’s eight-year-old daughter Sharvari. The Nighoot family are residents of Ahmadnagar, and they had been running from pillar to post for the past year to get their daughter’s death claim. The family proposes to use the claim amount for Sharvari’s education.

Suneeta was an MSC student of Ahmadnagar’s New Arts, Commerce and Science College in the academic year 2011-12. On August 3, 2011 she was on her way to college on her bicycle and met with an accident on the Ahmadnagar-Manmad highway. She was rushed to a private hospital, but succumbed to her injuries a day later.

Her daughter Sharvari, is in Std III student in a private school in Ahmadnagar. Suneeta’s claim could not go ahead as there was a name mismatch in her marriage certificate and the college records. MiD DAY had carried a special series between October 23 and 25 last year (‘Insurance Woes At UoP’) revealing how the university’s insurance scheme, especially with regard to Sunita’s case, had failed. The varsity’s Board of Students’ Welfare (BSF) stepped in thereafter and ensured that 16 death insurances and 22 accidental claims were settled. “By making it a point to follow up with the insurance company regularly, we have settled 22 accidental and 16 death insurance claims,” said Dr Pandit Shelke, director, BSF.  Shelke added that he is relieved that Suneeta’s case has been settled. 

“This case was pending since October 2011. I took over as director of BSF in May 2012. I was unaware about the case at that time. After MiD DAY reported on the issue, I personally took up the matter and worked as a mediator between the college and concerned insurance company to settle the claim,” Shelke said.

When contacted, Suneeta’s father-in-law Sitaram Nighoot said, “Better late than never. We had lost hope of getting the insurance amount and we couldn’t have done it if the newspaper had not published our story. We will be using the insurance amount for Suneeta’s daughters education.”
