First edition of Gandhi's autobiography leads StoryLTD's rare books auction

StoryLTD.com successfully hosted the second edition of its Online Auction of Rare Books on 12 - 13 January 2016. 72% lots sold for a total of Rs 30,82,538 (US $46,705). 67% of lots crossed their upper estimates, some selling for 7 – 10 times their estimates. The auction is a testament to the growing popularity of rare and out-of-print books among collectors.

Leading the sale was Lot 34: The Story of My Experiments with Truth, a two-volume set of the first edition of Mahatma Gandhi's iconic autobiography. Estimated at Rs 1,25,000 - Rs 1,75,000, the set achieved a price of Rs 3,88,080 (US $5,880).

Another highlight of the auction was Lot 46: Raza (Signed and Limited Edition Copy), a monograph on Modern Indian artist S H Raza, signed by the artist and the author. The book was valued at Rs 30,000 - Rs 35,000 and sold for nearly 10 times its upper estimate, fetching a bid of Rs 3,32,640 (US $5,040).

Iqbal: Poet of the East

Lot 20: Iqbal: Poet of the East, estimated at Rs 2,75,000 - Rs 3,25,000 (US $4,170 - $4,925), saw a winning bid of Rs 3,43,800 (US $5,209). With an introduction by Justice S A Rahman, this book is collection of poems by the Islamic poet and philosopher Muhammad Iqbal, who was deferred the title “Shair-e-Mushriq”, or Poet of the East, in British India.

Lot 42: The Constitution of India, circa 1980, estimated at Rs 25,000 - Rs 30,000 ($380 - $455), surpassed its upper estimate by nearly seven times with a bid of Rs 2,03,760 ($3,087). The book carries the printed signatures of the framers of the Constitution.
