Flavours of India to dominate London Olympics

The Tea Board of India is organising a series of special events during the London Olympics.

Flavours of India to dominate London Olympics

The best of the Indian Teas would be sampled at Heathrow Airport, Harrods, Southbank Centre and other prominent places in London.


These special Teas will be available for tasting at The Nehru Centre, which will be organizing a host of activities highlighting the Indian culture.



Flavours of India at Southbank Centre will be the major highlight.

The Tea Board of India brings to you for the first time an exhibition, flavours of India'', in joint collaboration between the Indian Ministry of Commerce
and the High Commission of India in London.

This unique initiative will feature display of diverse variety of Indian tea among other products.

With an objective to kinder a connection between the connoisseurs of tea and its various forms, be it the muscatel Darjeeling or strong Assam, as is said, there is a cup for everybody.

Besides an exquisite range of tea, on offer will be a wide selection of traditional delicacies specially chosen to complement the aroma and flavours of India and a host of cultural performances.

Being organized during the period of the London Olympics, this two-day event is scheduled to be held on August 1 and 2 at the Southbank Centre and guarantees a mix of a learning experience, colorfulness and excitement for individuals and families alike.

India is one of the largest tea producers in the world. Since time immemorial, it has been blessed with a rich array of tea, coffee and spices.

It is through these avenues that a major chunk of trade has been carried out with the European countries, including United Kingdom.

With the tea drinking culture forming a part of the elite class here, the British consumer has highly regarded the Indian tea, with Darjeeling variety emerging with a loyal fan base.

The prime focus of this exhibition will be on the different assortments of the Indian Tea, spanning from the Nilgiri to the Darjeeling type, which will be available for display and sale.

Various entrepreneurs and experts from India will be invited to exhibit and educate the audience on tea, its types and features. In addition to this, the fair will also witness a display of different variety of coffee.

The government will also take the initiative of presenting distinct spices, exclusive of India, and now an integral part of households worldwide.

Adding color to the programme, a series of cultural performances and workshops have been planned to showcase the rich history and culture of India including eminent personalities.

This would include performances of troupes from Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan portraying different Indian classical dance forms - Gidda and Bhangra of North India, by renowned choreographer Jay Kumar hosting a Bollywood dance class session and Bihu group dance specially deputed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

A third and final dimension to this event will be Indian delicacies comprising of a live kitchen of different cuisines from many parts of the nation.

This coupled with cooking classes will cater to the needs of enriching taste buds. Indian wines testing will also be a prominent feature.

At the time when the world sets its eye on the much-awaited Olympic Games 2012 in London, ''Flavours of India'' promises to be an enthralling experience.

Tea, coffee, spices, cultural programmes and activities - it is set to be an excellent platform for all involved be it the lovers of English afternoon tea, the international diaspora or the socialising Indian community.

Raising a toast to the spirit of Games, there will not be a better opportunity to get a feeler of India and indulge amidst the festive environment, enjoying the celebration on the banks of the River Thames.
