The heavy showers that lashed the city on Monday evening submerged the slums near Spicer Higher Secondary School, and the slumdwellers damaged school property in the belief that civic pipes running through the institution were responsible for their misery.
The slums, home to almost 500 families, had remained water-logged till midnight. Food and belongings of the families were destroyed when dirty canal water got into their homes.
They threw stones at the glass panes of the school and damaged other things as they believed the school's negligence had caused the problem.
School authorities said it was not their fault but the negligence of ward officers.
"We have a long canal from Bremen chowk that goes underground through the school premises further on to the road," said a school teacher who lives on the premises. "Because of the heavy rainfall, the pipes could not take the excess water. Water overflowed through the gate and entered the slum premises. We cannot be blamed for this."
After the protests, ward officers and other officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation visited the area yesterday morning.
