Dismissing media reports of decline in foreign tourist arrivals following the Delhi gangrape and recent incidents with foreign tourists, Minister of State for Tourism K Chiranjeevi Wednesday said the figures were "positive".

Foreign tourist flow in India rising, says Chiranjeevi

"The growth of foreign tourists in January and February (2013) has been positive and not negative, as reported by the media," Chiranjeevi said here, addressing an audience at a tourism-related public function here.

"Arrivals (of foreign tourists) have grown by 2.1 percent in these two months, and the foreign exchange earnings rose by 19.8 percent in terms of rupees and 11.4 percent in terms of (US) dollars... This is very encouraging," he said.

Chiranjeevi said that his ministry has discussed the issue of the safety of foreign tourists with chief ministers of all states as well as their police chiefs.

"We will take care (of the foreign tourists) to the maximum," he said.

There have been concerns over a series of incidents of rape and molestation of foreign tourists in the past few days.u00a0
