Owing to high prices at Deonar abattoir, revellers flock to a goat shed at Dongri that sells animals at Rs 250 per kg

Revellers disappointed with the astronomical prices of goats at Deonar abattoir rejoiced on the eve of Bakra Eid yesterday, as a group of sellers put up a shed at Dongri, offering goats for an affordable Rs 250 per kg.

The shed
A temporary goat shed has been erected near Mughal Masjid on Imam Bada Road at Dongri, where goats are weighed in front of the customers. For animals weighing less than 50 kg, buyers are charged Rs 250 per kg, while Rs 300 is for the goats weighing over 50 kg. All the goats hail from Ajmer in Rajasthan.

Ownerspeak
Speaking to MiD DAY, Wali Mohammed, the owner of the shed, said, "We started this venture about five days ago and so far, we have received a good response. Daily, a truck unloads about 50 goats and until now, we have managed to sell almost all of them."

He added, "Most of the customers are new to the market and are often fleeced at Deonar. Here, we weigh the animals in front of our customers, so that they are satisfied and know that they are paying the right price. We'll carry on with the trade in the coming year as well and would try to reduce the price if possible."

Happy buyers
Rameez Shaikh, a resident of Wadala, who had come to purchase a goat, said, "On Friday we visited Deonar and purchased a 40 kg goat for Rs 14,000. Later, one of our friends who had purchased his animal from the shed, informed us about it. Prices here are way cheaper in comparison to Deonar. We purchased a 32 kg goat for an affordable price of Rs 8,000."

Rehmatullah Rawoot, a resident of Imambada and one of the several who purchased a goat from the shed, said, "Going to Deonar abattoir and getting a good quality goat at an affordable price is a mammoth task. The market is jam-packed and to purchase a single animal it takes at least 5 to 6 hours. Considering that all the family members are busy throughout the day, it's very difficult to take time in-between and visit Deonar. Goats at the shed are cheaper than Deonar. Moreover, we also save on transporting charges which are about
Rs 1,000."

Price index
Goats below 50 kg: 250/kg
Goats above 50 kg: 300/kg
