It wasn't exactly a knee-jerk reaction, but what really triggered the resignations of BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke was the manner in which the three-man committee to probe the spot fixing fiasco was formed.

Formation of 3-man panel triggered off Jagdale and Shirke's resignations

The very fact that Jagdale was part of the three-man committee, without being consulted, made the situation even more bizarre, sources told SUNDAY MiD DAY.

BCCI had earlier announced that a five-member IPL operation committee, which involved Ajay Shirke, would appoint a committee to make a detailed enquiry into the spot fixing allegations against three Rajasthan Royals players as well as the betting charges against BCCI president N Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Maiyappan. It was also decided then that there would be a five-member enquiry commission.

“He (Shirke) was shocked to read the names of the three-member commission, instead of five, on news channels. There was no meeting or discussion held before a media release was issued to announce the three-man enquiry commission, which involved two retired judges and Jagdale,” a source close to Shirke said. “Jagdale was even more shocked, as he was named in that commission, without his knowledge,” the source added.

However, the source added that Shirke was thinking about resigning for over a week before he actually did it. “Jagdale, in all probability, would have waited for a few more days, had things not unfolded the way they did,” source added.u00a0
