Friendly neighbourhood China Town

Starved for tasty, paisa vasool options in the vicinity of the Mid-Day office, The Guide Team's foodies crossed the road to taste the fare at just-opened Chinese eatery 7 spice. Here's the 7-layer verdict

FIONA FERNANDEZ
There's an unsaid liaison between value-for-money Chinese eateries and Mumbai's offices; 7 Spice snugly fits the bill, quite literally. I settled into its compact interiors and stuck to starters Red Pepper Chicken
(Rs 115), Barbecue Chicken Wings (Rs 120) and Chicken Spring Rolls (Rs 95). The red pepper cleared the sinuses though I could do without the artificial colours; the chicken wings, ideal for after-
hour bouts of bingeing had a pleasant soy sauce aftertaste while the spring rolls passed the test for sasta
soul food.

MELISSA D'COSTA

I tried the Chicken Wonton Soup (Rs 70), which is ideal for a rainy day. It had steamed chicken wontons floating in a chicken broth. Not too oily, this clear soup is perfect to keep
the monsoon chills at bay.

ADITI SHARMA
After a lot of head-scratching when the ma ufffdtre-d' suggested Crispy Veg/ Pepper Salt (Rs 100) as the best vegetarian starter, I was a little disappointed. How wrong can you go with fried food? Still, I gave the go-ahead and our crunchy hot order arrived in 15 minutes. The owner promised all kinds of exotic veggies but what I got was the typical desi Chinese suspects, dunked in a thick batter. It tasted decent and the portions were generous, so no complaints there. But no encores for this dish.

AVIVA DHARMARAJ
Oily noodles scraped off the bottom of a wok were not what I hoped to chow down on when I ordered the Chow-Chow Noodles (Rs 110 for veg). The 'chow' in Chow-Chow is no more than bland cornflour gloop with assorted 'Chinese' veggies. So, if spicy, oily, vegetarian Chinese khaana is what you are happiest tucking into, then you are better off ordering the Vegetables in Hot Bean Sauce (Rs 120). Best enjoyed with steamed rice and accompanied by spring rolls, it's just the stuff nostalgia-infused food memories are made of.

MALINI BANERJEE
Numerically, 7 might be greater than 5, but the newly-opened 7 Spice is no 5 spice. The gravy for the Lamb in Oyster Sauce (Rs 160) tasted suspiciously like the Veg Manchurian, though the lamb was tender. I couldn't tell the Lemon Grass in the Veg Lemon Grass Soup (Rs 70), but it was spicy with bits of beancurd and ginger ideal to beat a nagging cold. With the maximum price for a dish being Rs 170 and an average of Rs 100 to Rs120 for its main course dishes, 7 Spice is value for money.

SOMA DAS
I tried the Veg Combo (Rs 100), which is a real value-for-money option and includes three spring rolls, a bowl of fried riceu00a0 or noodles and a Veg Manchurian Gravy. I liked the generous portions that are sufficient for two people. The food was yummy and though I generally don't like Manchurian gravies, I took an instant liking to their Veg Manchurian dish that had just the right amount of spice.

DHVANI SOLANI
When 7 Spice opened a week ago, with the image of a cherubic sumo wrestler to lure you inside, MiD DAY employees were spotted salivating. Dropping by was a welcome break from visits to dubious sandwich and chaat joints nearby. I could not taste any specific spice in the slightly sweet 7 Spice Special Rice (Rs 120, with noodles in it too) but the Veg Manchurian (Rs 100) that arrived within seven minutes of our placing the order, was the saving grace. Request the staff to avoid adding MSG or colour, before-hand.

AT 7 Spice, Shop No 3, Saat Aasra Building, Dr SS Rao Road, near Piramal Chambers, Lalbaug. Call: 64234634, 24105337
7 Spice didn't know we were there.
