It appears the Punjab drugs controversy, which has Olympian pugilist Vijender Singh mired in it, is not going to die out soon, given fresh developments. In another drug haul on Saturday, the Punjab police recovered 10 kg of narcotic substances used mainly in rave parties from a house in Mohali district. The contraband was found from former Arjuna Award winner Jagdish Singh alias Bhola’s home in Punjab.

Chequered past
This is not the first time that Singh has been involved in a drug scandal. In 2002, Singh, a former deputy superintendent of police in Punjab, was suspended after his name figured in a drug smuggling racket.

Again in 2009, he was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau in a drugs haul near Infinity Mall in Mumbai. Singh had been arrested with three others — Harwinder Singh, Harjinder Ram Banga, Veer Bahadur Singh — following the recovery of 25 kg of party drug Speed. Every kilogram of the high-grade drug was valued at Rs 13 lakh, making the haul, worth Rs 3.25 crore, one of the largest methamphetamine seizures till date, cops said.

Singh along with his associates Harwinder and Harjinder, had arrived in an Innova in front of the Malad mall and delivered a parcel of the drugs in crystal form to the other accused, a local taxi driver, Veer Bahadur Singh. Harwinder said he used to work as a cable operator in Punjab and Harjinder claimed to be Jagdish Singh’s driver.

All the accused were placed under arrest and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The case is pending before the NDPS court. Consequently, Singh was stripped of his Arjuna Award.

Saturday’s bust
The Punjab police on Saturday recovered 10 kg of narcotics, usually consumed at rave parties, from a house in Mohali district. The seizure was made after Olympic medal winning boxer Vijender Singh’s name recently appeared during police investigations of a drug racket in Haryana.

The contraband seized is worth over Rs 1 crore in the international market. Police said that the accused, Singh, used to supply it in rave parties in Mumbai and in some parts of Himachal Pradesh. Besides drugs, police have also recovered Rs 8.7 lakh in cash from his house. Cops are now suspecting that it is probably the same quality of high-grade contraband which was recovered by the NCB in Mumbai. Bhola has been arrested. u00a0
