From Paris With Love - Movie review

From Paris with Love
A; ACTION
Dir: Pierre Morel
Cast: John Travolta, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Melissa Mars
Rating: *

What's it about: Charlie Wax (Travolta) and James Reese (Meyers) have nothing in commonu00a0-- one is an American spy while the other is an aspiring CIA agent with a beautiful girlfriend. Their paths cross on a mission to thwart a terrorist attack. They backslap each other, crack jokes at each other's expense and double up as buddies. Set in Paris, there is plenty of action, car chases and vehicles being blown up in the second half.

What's hot: Those seeking mindless fun through bullets and grenades will be thrilled. The pace doesn't give up on the action either. Meyers seems to have fun along the way and enjoys his role as a covert agent. Also the fact that his personality mismatches Travolta's creates some hilarious moments. James is a rookie while Charlie is an expert in disposing dead bodies and dealing with violence.

What's not: The lack of chemistry between Travolta and Meyers isn't the only problem with the film. There is also the big white elephant in the roomu00a0-- what do you do with an over-the-hill actor and one who's yet to establish his credentials? Most of the scenes seem like a canvas for Travolta to massacre Meyers. Also the plot has a linear graph with no scope for surprises. Everything happens as it shouldu00a0-- they track the bad guys and finish everything off with finesse. Action is dull and boring despite being an important part of the storyline. Unlike other buddy films such as the Lethal Weapon series or the indulgent Rush Hour, this one comes across as an arrogant piece of work. The buildup to the climax is genuinely insipid and the climax itself is a huge letdown.

What to do: Liam Neeson's Taken made by the same camp is much more engaging and dramatic than From Paris With Love which has enough ammo to blow up a truck yet goes off in a whimper.
