From Romania with love
Wowing 10,000 students is no mean feat. But Akcent achieved that at the Algeria Festival
Akcent (pronounced as Accent) is a pop band that sings in Romanian, English and Spanish. The band has been in existence since 1999 and the present members include Adrian Sîna, Sorin Stefan Brotnei and Mihai Gruia. The group has won many awards in Europe, and are making a foray internationally. They recently performed at a festival in a Panvel college where they wowed a crowd of 10,000 students. CS caught up with them for a chat:
We have performed in India before and the crowds here are awesome. The thought of coming to India is always an exciting one. We have visited the Taj Mahal, it’s beautiful and seen some Bollywood films. Stars like Raj Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan are well-known in Europe. As far as Indian food is concerned, we find it a little too spicy.
Language no bar
We sing in Romanian, English and Spanish. However, when we sing in English, we reach out to more people. It’s important that people understand the lyrics when they listen to music. Then they can enjoy it more.
We have heard Bollywood music. In fact, we would love to compose for a Bollywood film. I think the music scene is pretty good here and Indians do love our kind of music. We have had successful shows here in the past. But I feel that Indians need to give more encouragement to independent artists.
