From tea vendor to PM: Narendra Modi's journey through the years

Narendra Modi, who was sworn-in as India's 15th Prime Minister on Monday, has come a long way. We take a look back at his journey from Vadnagar in Gujarat to 7 Race Course Road in New Delhi

Mumbai: Narendra Modi, who was sworn-in as India's 15th Prime Minister on Monday, has come a long way. We take a look back at his journey from Vadnagar  to 7 Race Course Road


17th September 1950: Born to Damodardas and Hiraba Modi in Vadnagar, Gujarat.


1965: Sold tea to Jawans going and coming from the border during the Indo-Pak war of 1965


1967: Married to Jashodaben. Left home at the age of 17 in order to seek enlightenment and traveled across the Himalayas. Returned in 1970.

1972 - 1977: Joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1972. Involved in the anti-emergency struggle in 1975. Went underground, Printed and distributed pamphlets against emergency.

1987: Joined BJP  as Organisational secretary of Gujarat state. BJP won Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections for the first time which brought his organizational skills to the fore.

1990 - 91: Modi was an integral part of the Somnath - Ayodhya rath yatra undertaken by L. K. Advani in 1990. Also involved in Ekta Yatra of Murli Manohar Joshi in 1991

1995 - 2001: Moved to Delhi as National Secretary. Played a key role in organising campaigns of Lok Sabha elections of 1999 which was won by the BJP.

October 2001: Sworn in as CM of Gujarat in 2001 and replaced Keshubhai Patel. Riots of Godhra taok place in 2002. He gets accused for his lack of proper handling and also encouraging the mobs in some parts.

2007 - 2011: Won the state assembly election for 3rd time in 2007. Acquitted by Supreme Court over riots in 2011. Embarked on a Sadbhavna Yatra to reach out to minorities in the state.

2012-2014: Won a record fourth straight term as chief minsiter. Nominated as candidate for PM by the BJP for the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls. Leads the NDA to a landslide win and a majority for the BJP on their own in a historic eletion campaign.
