BJP chief claims to be on a strict diet and completely off sweets post his weight loss surgery, but some habits die hard

One month into his bariatric surgery and 10 kilograms lighter, Nitin Gadkari, people would think, would be a man on a weight loss mission. But the BJP chief, like his many counterparts, cannot keep his hands off festive sweets and has no reservations going public about his weakness.

In September, Nitin Gadkari underwent a weight loss surgery and he claims to have lost 10 kilos already. The political giant may be able to suppress his ambitions of becoming PM and be content with the post of party president, but a few other indulgences even he has no control over.

On Saturday at the annual Diwali Melawa at Nariman Point, this reporter caught up with Gadkari and asked him how he feels post the surgery to which he said, "I feel energetic. Nowadays I rarely eat. My diet mostly comprises a phulka (chapatti) and two curries. I don't even manage to finish that," he said. Some senior party leaders said their president mostly depends on coconut water and eats small quantities every two-three hours.

Gadkari told Sunday MiDDAY that he was completely off sweets but a plate full of sweet puris, chaklis and chiwda in front of him (see picture) told a different story.

Nutritionist Anjali Peswani, said, "The plate in front of Gadkari would have contained 800-1,000 kcal of calories. This is dangerous for someone who underwent a bariatric surgery just a month ago. If he managed to eat everything that was on that plate, then it will increase his blood sugar level. Since he is diabetic, that isn't good for his health."

Meanwhile, a BJP leader said, "He is trying his best to control his diet, but on certain occasions and events, things aren't under control."
