Gadkari says Prime Minister equally to blame for CWG graft

BJP president Nitin Gadkari yesterday lashed out at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) for the alleged irregularities at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games (CWG).

In the city on a personal visit, Gadkari met the media and said while city MP Suresh Kalmadi was responsible for some of the arrangements, the PMO was in-charge of much more.

"Kalmadi is responsible for expenses of Rs 1,600 crore on the Games, but what about the big expenditure of Rs 70,000 crore for which signatures and sanctions were obtained from the Prime Minister's Office?" said Gadkari.

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is equally responsible for the entire corruption, as his office has given grants and permissions."

Gadkari, who visited his sister Meera Joshi for a family function at Erandawane, highlighted the controversy around the CWG and said that it was a national shame. He said the issue will be raised in the Parliament soon by the BJP.

Gadkari is also planning a conference in Delhi in which a booklet is to be released about "the misdeeds of Kalmadi and the others involved in the scam".

The booklet will estimate the size of the scam and its nature. The information will also be upload on the party website.

Gadkari cited the example of the CWG stadium, which cost Rs 918 crore.

"It is not easy to digest how this much could be spent on the stadium, which I visited during the CWG," said Gadkari. "An international sports stadium in Nagpur cost Rs 60 crore and the facelift for the Brabourne Stadium required Rs 216 crore."

The BJP had condemned Kalmadi in the city two months ago as well. "We are also publishing the booklet in Pune about the misdeeds of Kalmadi," said Vikas Mathkari, former leader of opposition, PMC house. "This time we will have a strong proof in out hand."
