New Delhi/Jammu: Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will witness the opening of India's longest road tunnel in Udhampur on Monday.

The tunnel will cut the distance between Jammu and Srinagar by 30-kilometers.

An official release said that the tunnel will also reduce traffic jams on National Highway-1A that occur due to snowfall.
It said Gadkari will be present at the final blast ceremony when the National Highway Authority of India engineers will drill a hole through the final section of the tunnel between Chenani and Nashri.

The tunnel is 9.2 kilomters long and is part of the ambitious 286 km-long four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

The road is likely to be opened to traffic in July 2016.
