Gold finger Samaresh Jung's record of five gold medals in the Melbourne Games four years ago is in serious threat of being broken.

Gagan Narang

Narang, who had already won three gold medals in four competition days earlier, clinched gold in the 50m rifle three position shooting event on the fifth day at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Saturday.

Narang aggregated 1262.2 points to clinch gold ahead of Scotland's Jonathan Hammond, who won silver medal with 1255.3 points and England's James Huckle, who aggregated 1254.9 points to finish third.

But Huckle was under tremendous pressure. For, Imran Hasan Khan, who had paired with Narang to clinch gold in the pairs' event of the 50m rifle three position competition on Friday, was following him very, very closely. In fact, Khan lost out on a medal by 2.5 points. The Brit admitted the fact after his medal-winning effort. "The Indian guy in fourth was so close to me that there was quite a bit of pressure. To get so close to silver is great. Of course, all participants aim for gold, but Gagan Narang has put in some amazing performances."

Khan also took the opportunity to congratulate Indian shooters who have done well in the past. "It is a social thing. A lot of Indians are training at a very high level," said Huckle.
