Gambhir: Big knocks around the corner

India skipper gambhir says 30's and 40's can be significant contributions too

Gautam Gambhir did not play Captain Cool on the eve of the second India vs New Zealand one-day international yesterday.

Asked about his lack of big scores, the stand-in India captain shot back: "People are expecting big scores from me. But 30s and 40s are also important because you have to take chances in ODI cricket. I can't go and score a fifty in every innings because you have to play in accordance to the situation and take chances.

Before the last match at Guwahati, Gambhir played one-day cricket in Sri Lanka who played host to the Asia Cup in June. He insisted he was in good nick. This visit to Jaipur is different from other trips.

This time, he will miss the presence of former Test cricketer Parthasarthy Sharma, who was virtually his personal coach until he passed away in October due to cancer. "He was a father figure to me," said Gambhir. "I always used to lean on him whenever I was in bad form or developed some minor flaws in my batting. I miss him a lot. He was always ready to help me out from my early days and his tips were helpful." And if skipper Gambhir works his way to a hundred today, it won't be surprising if he dedicates it to Sharma.

Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori is looking forward to the pitch taking turn.

"It looks as if the pitch would assist spin. We might play two spinners and I will have a big role to play," he said.
