Assassin's Creed finally makes an Indian version with way too many painted elephants. Still, a game worth playing
We have been excited about Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: India since it was announced last year. The Chronicles version of the game is a 2.5D side-scroller so don’t expect hardcore graphics here. This also means most modern PCs can play the game quite comfortably.

The year is 1841 and you play as Arbaaz Mir, an assassin who just stole back the Kohinoor Diamond from the British. This unfortunately leads to your lover being kidnapped, and the story revolves around you saving her.
Assassin’s India definitely looks more colourful that the other iterations of the game. We can’t say we love it but it’s a decent change. There are some extremes with the art department going crazy with the Indianisation of several elements. Almost all elephants seem to be painted in chalk colours.
While it is a typical Assassin’s story, the controls in this seem a bit painful on the PC especially the if you get caught in some gunfire or sword fight in the initial stages where you don't have any weapons to fight back. In the later levels too, the game encourages you to use stealth by gimping Arbaaz with a with a low health bar, but at least you now have weapons to fight back.
The story holding it all together is also wafer thin, and it is essentially you thwarting a series of possibly bad events before they happen. The voice acting though is thankfully not Apu from The Simpsons, and it is kind of fun to eavesdrop on the Sikh guard’s conversations which are in Punjabi, always hoping there is some major glaring error in the subtitles and the conversation. Luckily, none discovered yet.
Being an Assassin’s game, it is still better than most games out there, and hey it’s India; you have to play it. It feels
a little formulaic but it’s still a good distraction till the next full-fledged Assassin’s Creed game is out. Not to mention the price point is fairly decent at Rs 299 on Steam; in April, Ubisoft will be launching a physical copy of the Chronicle games for Rs 1,999
for the current-gen consoles which will include China, India and Russia.
