Game Review: Sniper Ghost Warrior 3

The Sniper Ghost Warrior has never been considered an AAA title and before the latest version, it always followed a linear format. However, the developer, CI Games, decided to shake things up with Sniper Ghost Warrior 3. For one, the game features decent graphics. The second major change is the open world format. The game still has a storyline and the dedication towards accurately representing sniping is still on top of the list of priorities, but now you can go around killing wolves and doing side missions.

The story is typical: you play Jonathan ‘Jon’ North who is on assignment in Georgia, the Eastern European country, not the US state. However, you have a mission of your own, you have to save your brother, Robert, who has been captured by a warlord from the region. Needless to say, you find your brother and you save the day for an entire country. Typical American saviour complex, except it’s being served by a Polish game developer.

The good
There are many things that Sniper Ghost Warrior gets right, starting with the sniping, which is one of the best you can experience in a game. Sniping in SGW3 is all about taking your time and getting the perfect kill. Making adjustments to compensate for the wind and elevation, slowing time by taking a deep breath just makes for an amazing experience. Even sneaking up and catching a target off guard is satisfying. Though the AI in the game is a bit dumb, it doesn’t negate the experience.

The bad
We were not fans of the regular combat though, it just felt like a betrayal to the game and wasn’t done very well. Jon also has the life expectancy of a twig on a busy highway. This means you die often, and end up doing the whole mission from the last checkpoint, which is usually at the start of the mission. Even though there seem to be crucial moments within that mission, the checkpoint never shifts to those. Unfortunately, this isn’t the only reason you will end up replaying a checkpoint multiple times. The game has some serious frame-rate problems, long load time and drop frames while zooming in. This can be an issue while playing, as you can miss critical shots, thereby failing the mission because the soldiers alerted everyone of your presence.

The graphics, though the best in the series, are still a far cry from the standards of today. There are, of course, some scenes that look beautiful, but zoom in a little closer, and you will see low quality textures and a real lack of detail. Fortunately for us, the game didn’t crash, which we believe other users have been reporting online.

Final verdict
The game clocks in 12 hours if you do the main storyline; along with side missions you can expect around 30+ hours of gameplay. Multiplayer will expand this even further.

The sad part is the boring story. If everything in this game had worked as it should, Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 would still have been an enjoyable title. While the graphics look good, they aren’t there yet and the game feels incomplete. We feel it may be worth picking up from the bargain bin after all the eventual patches come out, but not right now at full price.
