Game Reviews: Dead Rising 2 and Marvel vs Capcom 3

DEAD RISING 2
PS3
Hands-on preview

FOUR years after its release, zombie slaughterfest Dead Rising finally gets a sequel that's set for a September 28 release.

Dead Rising 2 has a new protagonist in Chuck Greene, a daredevil Motocross Champ who's a participant in a game show called Terror is Reality, a zombie-killing competition. Predictably, things go wrong, leading to a zombie outbreak which Chuck is framed for.

Having played the first game, Dead Rising 2 felt instantly familiar. The control system remains the same, as does the basic structure of the game. Missions have to be completed within a specified period of time in order that the story advances, and there are plenty of side missions that can be undertaken. The scale of the game is way bigger this time around, with the action taking place in Fortune City, a fictional version of Las Vegas.
The environment is huge, the sheer number of zombies on screen is overwhelming, and the spread of weapons at your disposal is enormous. Almost any object you come across can be used to despatch the undead inu00a0 gruesome fashion. The combo weapons system is the best new feature by far. You can now combine two weapons to create a powered-up super weapon. Take a baseball bat and some nails, and you can swing away with this spiked bat. Combine a bucket with a drill and you get the deadliest hat in the world! The possibilities are endless, and awesome.

The game saving system remains as unforgiving as the last time around; a flaw we were hoping would be rectified this time round. The graphics are a good improvement, as is the animation. Overall, Dead Rising 2 feels a bit too familiar, but if you liked the first one, you will enjoy this one even more.

This is the over-the-top zombie apocalypse you've been waiting for.

MARVEL vs CAPCOM 3
PS3
Hands-on preview

We didn't get as much time with this one, but Marvel vs Capcom 3 features 3-on-3 tag battles with the biggest names from the Marvel and Capcom universe and, from the looks of it, promises to be a great fighting game. Iron Man, Hulk, Dante and Ryu are a few of the selectable fighters on the roster. The battles are fast paced and energetic, and it's an easy game to get addicted to. The game is set to release early next year.
